Kate's Story

1971 -

Kate Starre won successive gold medals with the Hockeyroos in 1996 and 2000. A triple Olympian, Starre made her Games debut in 1992, when the team placed fifth. The West Australian was a tremendous player for the national team as it emerged as one of the most dominating squads in world sport under the leadership of coach Ric Charlesworth. A versatile midfielder, Starre was renowned for her specialist skills as a short corner pusher. Both gold medal finals in which Starre participated were won by the same score: the Hockeyroos beat South Korea 3-1 in 1996 and defeated Argentina 3-1 in 2000, thus becoming the first women’s hockey team to successfully defend an Olympic title. Starre has stayed involved with the sport as an elite-level coach.
