Kiera's Story

Kiera Gazzard first noticed artistic swimming at her local pool as an eight-year-old, after spotting the artistic swim team training at the other end of the pool. Shortly after, Kiera attended a ‘come and try’ lesson and was recruited for the U12 team.

While she grew up training at the Sydney Emerald Synchronised Swimming Club, Kiera moved to Queensland later in life to train at the Gold Coast Mermaids Club.
The decision to move interstate provided the perfect opportunity for Kiera to further develop her skills.

In 2017 she was a member of the FINA World Championships team, where Australia beat Egypt for the first time in six years. This was a massive milestone for the Australia team as Egypt was Australia's biggest competition when it comes to Olympic qualification.

While growing up Kiera set herself a goal to become the first Australian soloist to compete at the Junior World Championships. In 2018, she made this goal a reality when she was selected to swim solo at the FINA World Junior Championships.

As well as the solo swim, Kiera competed in the duet and team events which she said was an amazing opportunity and challenge that helped her development as a senior athlete.

The 18-year-old suffered a major setback leading into the 2019 FINA World Championships when she was diagnosed with a concussion after being kicked in the head during a training session.

Considering the World Championship event was an Olympic qualifying event, the reality of being unfit to compete was difficult for Kiera to accept. She cheered on from the sidelines and the team made it through the qualifying event.

Kiera made her Olympic debut at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Aussie team placed a respectable ninth overall in the tournament, with a technical routine score of 75.6351 and free routine score of 77.3667, earning them a total of 153.0018.

At the 2023 Aquatics World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Kiera  impressed in both the technical team and technical duet events.

The technical team of Kiera, Carolyn Rayna Buckle, Hannah Burkhill, Georgia Courage-Gardiner, Alessandra Ho, Margo Joseph-Kuo, Zoe Poulis and Milena Waldmann placed 11th in the preliminaries with a score of 200.7701 to become the first Australians to make the world championships team final since 2007.

And Kiera combined with Carolyn Rayna Buckle in the technical duet to finish 19th out of 38, making them the first Australian duo to finish in the top 20 at the world championships in more than 20 years.

In a dazzling display of aquatic artistry and athleticism at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Australia's Artistic Swimming Team captivated audiences with their technical, free and acrobatic routines to place ninth overall on 728.4358 points.

The team’s technical routine, inspired by a jungle adventure and set to Hans Zimmer's "Volcano," was meticulously executed. Scoring 235.9071 points and no base marks.

The team’s free routine, themed around the world of "Avatar" and set to music from "Avatar: The Way of Water," showcased a powerful and imaginative display that scored 280.5521 overall.

Their vibrant acrobatic routine, celebrating cheerleading with Alvaro Rodriguez Alvarez's "Move Your Body," demonstrated both enthusiasm and precision to earn a score of 211.9766.

The duet with Kiera and Carolyn performed their technical routine to the "Charlie's Angels" theme and their free routine to music from "Kung Fu Panda", they scored a total of 408.1053 to place 16th overall.
