Kirsten's Story
Kirsten Thomson joined with Susie O’Neill, Giaan Rooney and Petria Thomas to finish second, behind the powerful Americans, in the 4 x 200 metres relay at Sydney 2000. Jacinta van Lint and Elka Graham had swum in the heat.
In the final, O’Neill led off and gave Australia the lead which wasn’t surrendered to the Americans until the final leg when Jenny Thompson stormed home to edge out Petria Thomas. In being part of the victorious team, Jenny Thompson became the first woman to win seven gold medals in Olympic swimming. Kirsten Thomson picked up another silver in the same relay at the 2003 world championships.
