Lawrence's Story

Lawrie Peckham, a Victorian schoolboy prodigy in high jump, was still a teenager when he competed in first Olympic Games at Tokyo 1964. He finished 10th. He improved two places in the final at Mexico City 1968, behind the gold medal-winning American, Dick Fosbury, doing his famous ‘flop’.

At Munich 1972, where Peckham was the captain of the athletics team, he finished 18th. He also competed at four Commonwealth Games, Perth 1962, Kingston 1966, Edinburgh 1970 and Christchurch 1974, winning the high jump gold medal in 1966 and 1970. He was a ten-time national high jump champion.

His wife, the former Judy Canty, competed as a 400 metres runner at Montreal 1976.
