Loretta's Story

Loretta Dorman was a member of the first two women’s hockey teams to represent Australia at the Olympics, in 1984 and 1988. The highlight came at her second Games when the Hockeyroos won Australia’s first gold medal in the sport. After finishing an unlucky fourth in Los Angeles, the Hockeyroos entered Seoul as one of the chances in a very strong tournament. After winning their way to the semi-final, they beat the Netherlands, the reigning world and Olympic champions, 3-2. In the final the team had to overcome host nation South Korea, who were cheered on by 26,000 screaming fans. After a scoreless first half, goals to Debbie Bowman and Lee Capes secured a famous 2-0 victory for the Aussies.
