Maree's Story

1963 -

Maree Fish was a member of the women’s hockey team that won a gold medal at the 1988 Games. It was Australia’s first gold medal in the sport. Fish had one of the more remarkable and memorable Olympic careers. The Tasmanian was the reserve goalkeeper for the Hockeyroos in Seoul behind Kathleen Partridge, rated the best keeper in the world. Fish, an outstanding talent in her own right, and Lorraine Hillas were substituted on in the last two minutes of the final for their first action of the tournament to ensure they would receive gold medals. (Hockey only awarded medals to players who had been on the field of play during the Games.) Under great pressure as the Koreans surged forward, Fish made a dazzling save from a penalty corner to prove her mettle and ensure a true team victory.
