Mark's Story

Marcus “Mark” Carew established himself among Australia’s leading middleweight judokas during the late 1970s. Competing in the 86-kilogram division, he collected four medals at the 1977 and 1979 Oceania Championships, including two gold.

Carew earned selection for the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games and made his Olympic debut aged 25. His opening contest was against Poland’s Krzysztof Kurczyna, who prevailed by the narrow margin of a minor score after the five-minute bout.

The defeat ended Carew’s Olympic campaign, leaving him equal 19th in the middleweight division. He remained a leading figure in Australian judo and later won the middleweight title at the 1984 Australian Championships in Melbourne.
