Mark's Story

Backstroker Mark Kerry’s greatest moment in swimming came at the Moscow Games of 1980 when he won a gold medal as part of Australia’s men’s 4x100m medley relay. Kerry, the lead swimmer, swam a PB to get team-mates Peter Evans, Mark Tonelli and Neil Brooks off to a flying start. Fans also remember the famous win for Norman May’s cherished call, which featured the immortal climax, “Gold! Gold to Australia! Gold!” Kerry also won an individual bronze medal in the 200m backstroke. He won a third medal, a bronze, in the 4x100m medley relay in 1984. He also competed in the 100m backstroke at both Games, and the 4x200m freestyle relay in Moscow.
