Matthew's Story

Matt Abood made his long awaited Olympic debut at the Rio Games, after claiming a 4x100m freestyle relay spot and an individual 50m freestyle swim.

He placed eighth in his heat of the 50m freestyle. He also helped Australia secure a spot in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay final, with second in the heat. The team of Cameron McEvoy, James Roberts, James Magnussen and Kyle Chalmers went on to claim bronze.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Abood finished 11th in the 50m freestyle. He then went on to finish fifth in the 100m freestyle at the 2016 Nationals where he logged his fastest effort in three years (48.89) to secure his spot in the 4x100m freestyle relay and a Games debut.

The Sydney-born swimmer faced heartbreak in 2012 when he missed the London Team by 0.02 seconds after he finished third in the 50 freestyle.
