Matthew's Story
1978 –
Triple Olympian Matthew Wells won three medals for Australia in men’s hockey: bronze in 2000 and 2008 and gold in 2004. Wells was the only member of the Kookaburras to have played on each of the medal teams from Sydney to Beijing. From Tasmania, Wells proved a formidable defender for the Kookaburras for more than a decade. The highlight of his career came in Athens when the team finally secured Australia its first gold medal in men’s hockey after 48 years of trying. With the scores tied 1-1 in the final against the Netherlands, a Jamie Dwyer goal in the eighth minute of extra time sealed the famous victory. Wells is one of an elite group of champions to have won three Olympic hockey medals for Australia.
