Born in Wagga Wagga, Melanie Wells (nee Twitt) made her senior international debut in 1998. Wells competed at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics. The Hockeyroos finished in fifth place on each occasion and Wells announced her retirement after the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2007 she married men’s hockey gold medallist, Matthew Wells, after first meeting at the 1997 Junior World Cup.
