Michael's Story
1977 –
Michael McCann won a gold medal for Australia in men’s hockey in 2004. The striker proved a prolific scorer for the Kookaburras during his career. His best performance in Athens came in the semi-final when he scored twice as Australia defeated Spain 6-3. The team then beat the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time in the final to record a memorable victory. The success finally ended Australia’s men’s hockey hoodoo at the Olympics. Before 2004, Australia had won three silver medals, three bronze medals and been placed fourth twice in Olympic tournaments. The win proved one of the most popular Australian successes of the Athens Games.
