Michael's Story

Born in Melbourne, Michael Tucker began playing basketball with Dandenong at the age of 12. Despite being diagnosed with Marfan syndrome as a teenager and advised to stop playing, he continued to pursue the sport. The tall centre-forward earned Australian selection in 1975 after helping secure qualification for the following year’s Olympic Games.

Tucker made his Olympic debut aged 21 at Montreal 1976, appearing in all seven of Australia’s matches. He contributed to victories over Japan and Mexico as the Boomers advanced to the classification round. Australia finished eighth, with Tucker averaging more than eight points a game.

He returned for Moscow 1980, where Australia defeated Italy and Sweden during the preliminary stage. Further victories over Czechoslovakia, Senegal and India again carried the Boomers to eighth place. Tucker completed his second Olympic campaign with 40 points and 25 rebounds across seven matches.

After injuries shortened his playing career, Tucker moved into coaching and led Australia’s men’s wheelchair basketball team. His tenure included the 1990 World Championships and Barcelona 1992 Paralympic Games. His transition from dual Olympian to national coach extended his contribution to Australian basketball beyond his own playing career.
