Michael's Story
Michael Turner represented Australia in water polo at two Olympic Games. Born in 1951, Turner was 29 when he made his Olympic debut at Moscow 1980. He played alongside his younger brother, Charles, with the pair later reuniting in the Australian team at Los Angeles 1984. Australia finished seventh in Moscow after recording four victories and a draw across the tournament.
Four years later, Turner helped the Australians advance to the medal round in Los Angeles, where wins over Japan and the Netherlands and draws with Italy and Spain contributed to a fifth-place finish. It was Australia’s best result in the Olympic men’s water polo tournament at that time.
Associated with Cronulla-Sutherland Water Polo Club during his career, Turner earned recognition as one of Australia’s leading players of his era. His contribution to the sport was formally acknowledged in 2014 when he was inducted into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame.
