Michelle's Story

Michelle “Mitzi” Ferguson became one of Australia’s leading foil fencers during the 1970s. Born in 1959, she won the Australian junior women’s foil championship in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Ferguson progressed to senior success in 1978 when she captured the Australian open women’s foil title.


Ferguson was 20 when she represented Australia at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Competing in the women’s individual foil, she placed third in her opening-round pool to advance to the next stage. Ferguson finished sixth in her second-round pool and 22nd overall in her only Olympic appearance.
