Neil's Story

Neil Stephens is a former Australian professional cyclist who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in the men's road race. Born in Canberra on 1 October 1963, he was one of Australia's pioneering riders in the European professional peloton.

By the time of the Atlanta Olympics, Stephens had already established an impressive international career, winning Australian national road titles and racing for leading European teams. In 1996 he enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, winning the Vuelta a Andalucía and a stage of the Tour of the Basque Country.

Stephens later made history as a Tour de France stage winner and became one of Australia's most influential cycling figures. After retiring from racing, he enjoyed a successful career as a sports director with several leading professional teams.
