Paul's Story
Paul Byrne is a former Australian middle-distance runner who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in the 800 metres. Born in Geelong, Victoria, on 29 January 1976, Byrne was one of Australia's most promising young athletes during the 1990s.
Byrne achieved international recognition in 1994 when he won the gold medal in the 800 metres at the World Junior Championships in Lisbon. Two years later, he reached the semi-finals of the men's 800 metres at the Atlanta Olympics.
His personal best of 1:45.91, set in 1995, ranked him among Australia's leading 800-metre runners. Although injuries affected much of his senior career, his World Junior title remains a significant achievement in Australian athletics.
