Paul's Story
Paul Wiggins is an Australian wheelchair racing athlete who represented Australia in the wheelchair demonstration events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Born in Koonya, Tasmania, on 7 June 1962, Wiggins became one of Australia's leading wheelchair racers after taking up the sport following a motorcycle accident in 1985.
At Atlanta 1996, Wiggins competed in the men's wheelchair 1500 metres demonstration event, finishing seventh overall. He also represented Australia at the 1992 and 1996 Paralympic Games.
Wiggins achieved significant success internationally, winning Commonwealth Games gold in the wheelchair marathon and bronze in the wheelchair 800 metres at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. He was also a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Marathon wheelchair division and a pioneer of Australian wheelchair racing.
