Richard's Story
Richard MacQuire is a former Australian canoe slalom athlete who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Born in Melbourne on 17 February 1972, MacQuire developed into one of Australia's top slalom paddlers and was a national champion in the men's K1 discipline.
MacQuire began canoe slalom as a teenager on the Yarra River and progressed through national and international competition during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Prior to Atlanta, he represented Australia at multiple World Championships and World Cup events.
At the Atlanta Olympics, he competed in the men's K1 (kayak single) canoe slalom event and finished 24th overall against a strong international field. His participation helped continue Australia's presence in Olympic canoe slalom competition.
MacQuire was widely regarded as one of Australia's leading male slalom canoeists of his generation and played an important role in the development of the sport in Australia.
