Richard's Story
Richard Rowles is a former Australian boxer who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Born in Lae, Papua New Guinea, on 3 January 1973, Rowles competed in the light-middleweight division and was a member of the Australian Institute of Sport boxing program.
At the Atlanta Olympics, Rowles competed in the men's 71 kg light-middleweight event finishing equal 9th. Four years later he returned to Olympic competition in Sydney, becoming a two-time Olympian.
Prior to his Olympic debut, Rowles won a bronze medal in the welterweight division at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. He later claimed Australian national titles and an Oceania Championship gold medal, establishing himself as one of Australia's leading amateur boxers of his era.
