Robert's Story

Robert Gordon Barrie represented Australia in modern pentathlon at two Olympic Games, first competing at Munich 1972 at the age of 20. The event demanded proficiency across five disciplines: horse riding, fencing, shooting, swimming and cross-country running.

Barrie scored 4,600 points to finish 32nd in the men’s individual event in Munich. He returned to Olympic competition eight years later at Moscow 1980, placing 37th with 4,747 points. Following his competitive career, Barrie remained involved in sport as a fencing and swimming coach in Wollongong, sharing the experience gained during his two Olympic campaigns with younger athletes.
