Robert's Story

1881-1935

Bob Craig, from Balmain, like many of his Sydney contemporaries was an all-round sportsman. He played in the forwards in the Olympic match. Upon returning to Australia after the tour, he converted to rugby league and whilst playing for Balmain became a dual rugby international. Craig was a NSW and national swimming champion who competed against Freddy Lane, a dual gold medallist at Paris 1900.  He was also the first serious mentor of Barney Kieran, who took the swimming world by storm in the early years of the twentieth century. Soccer and water polo were other sports in which he excelled.
