Robert's Story

Robert Newbery teamed with Dean Pullar to win the bronze medal in the synchronised springboard at Sydney 2000. Newbery then climbed further up the diving tower to finish fifth, with Mathew Helm, in the synchronised platform. Synchronised diving had its Olympic debut at Sydney.

The bronze medal was the first in diving by Australian men since Richmond Eve’s gold medal in the plain high diving at Paris 1924. In Athens, Newbery won bronze medals in both the synchronised diving events. He joined with Steve Barnett in the synchronised springboard and then with Helm again in the synchronised platform.  With three Olympic diving medals, Newbery became Australia’s most-decorated male diver. His wife Chantelle’s gold and two bronze medals made her the most-decorated female Australian diver.

In Beijing, Newbery finished sixth in the synchronised springboard, with Scott Robertson, and a close fourth, with Helm yet again, in the synchronised platform.  Newbery’s best performance in the individual events was eighth in the platform in Athens.
