Queensland freestyle swimmer Ronald “Ron” McKeon emerged internationally as a teenager, winning the 200 metres, 400 metres and 4x200-metre relay at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. He made his Olympic debut at Moscow 1980, aged 19, reaching three finals during his first Games.

McKeon finished fifth in the 200-metre freestyle and eighth in the 400-metre freestyle, while Australia placed seventh in the 4x200-metre freestyle relay. He returned at Los Angeles 1984, again finishing eighth in the 400 metres.
