Russell's Story

Making his national debut in 2006, Russell Ford was a part of the team that lost 4-3 to Germany in the World Cup final. The talented striker went on compete at the 2007 Champions Trophy where Australia again finished with silver at the hands of Germany. Ford won his first Champions Trophy title in 2010, scoring four goals throughout the tournament.

Ford went on compete at his debut Olympic Games in London after receiving a call up to replace injured 2008 striker Des Abbott. Kicking off the tournament with a resounding 6-0 victory over South Africa, Australia- ranked world number one- went on to beat Spain and Pakistan but drew with Argentina and Great Britain in the pool stage. In the semi-final the Australians held a 2-1 lead over defending Olympic Champions Germany midway through the second half, but the Germans stormed home to win 4-2. The Aussie Kookaburras bounced back to knock off the British 3-1 in the bronze medal match.
