Sydney native Sam Hardy made his Olympic debut at the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo at the Postponed 2020 Olympic Games. Joining with Josh Hicks to compete in the Men's Pair, Hardy entered the Japanese capital with a renewed focus after a strong third-placed finish at the 2019 World Rowing Championships.
The duo were the favourites going into their Tokyo Heat and their fast start and early lead saw them finish first. However, they were unable to secure a start in the race for medals after they finished fourth in the Semi-Final. Racing in the B-Final, the crew finished fourth, ultimately placing them 10th overall.
