Shelley's Story

Shelley Oates-Wilding is a former Australian sprint canoeist who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Born in Sydney on 4 July 1965, she transitioned to canoeing after a serious knee injury ended her elite netball ambitions.

At the Atlanta Olympics, Oates-Wilding competed in the women's K4 500-metre event, helping Australia achieve an eighth-place finish. She later returned for the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Beyond Olympic canoeing, Oates-Wilding achieved international success in surf ski and outrigger canoe racing, winning world titles and becoming a respected coach and educator. She later founded the Ikaika Hawaii Watermans Academy, dedicated to youth development and ocean sports education.
