Stephen's Story
Melbourne-born Stephen “Steve” Breheny was a late starter in basketball but progressed to the national team and Australia’s emerging domestic league. A versatile guard and forward, Breheny won consecutive national league championships with St Kilda in 1979 and 1980 before making his Olympic debut at Moscow 1980, aged 26.
Breheny appeared in three matches during the Olympic tournament, averaging 5.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. Australia recorded five wins from seven games, including victories over eventual silver medallist Italy and Czechoslovakia, but finished eighth after missing the medal round. Breheny later helped Australia place fifth at the 1982 World Championship, then continued his domestic playing career with St Kilda, Geelong and Coburg. After retiring as a player, he coached teams in both the men’s and women’s national leagues.
