Steve's Story
Victorian distance runner Steve Austin developed into one of Australia’s leading endurance athletes during the late 1970s. He represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships and won three consecutive national titles over 5,000 metres from 1980 to 1982. Austin also secured Australian championships over 10,000 metres, demonstrating his strength across the longer track events.
Austin made his Olympic debut at Moscow 1980, aged 29, contesting both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres. He progressed through the opening round of the 5,000 metres in 13 minutes, 43.15 seconds before placing 11th in his semi-final and 18th overall. In the 10,000 metres, Austin finished fifth in his heat and 21st overall. He continued competing over longer distances and won the Australian marathon championship in 1986.
