Steven's Story
Born in Albury, New South Wales, in 1969, Steven Kettner established himself as one of Australia’s leading super-heavyweight weightlifters of the 1990s. He was 23 when he made his Olympic debut at Barcelona in 1992 and 27 when he returned for a second Games at Atlanta in 1996. Competing in the heaviest division, Kettner represented Australia at the highest level in a demanding era for the sport.
Kettner’s rise was shaped by strong Commonwealth Games performances. At Auckland in 1990, he won bronze in the snatch, clean and jerk and total in the super-heavyweight class. Four years later, at Victoria in 1994, he claimed gold in the snatch and silver in both the clean and jerk and total, confirming his place among the Commonwealth’s top lifters.
At the Olympic Games, Kettner finished 11th in Barcelona and 15th in Atlanta, giving him two Olympic appearances for Australia and a lasting place in the nation’s weightlifting history.
