Timothy's Story

Tim Deavin made his second Olympic appearance at Rio, taking over 125 international caps worth of experience into the Games.

The Aussie Olympic campaign kicked off with a 2-1 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand but despite starting strong, the side then suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses to Spain and Belgium. Determined to claim their third straight Olympic medal, the Aussies then secured a 2-1 win over Great Britain and a 9-0 victory over Brazil, setting themselves up for a quarter-final clash against the number 2 ranked side, the Netherlands. The Aussies quickly saw their hopes of a gold medal fade as the Dutch secured a 4-0 win, knocking the favourites out of the Olympic competition.

The Tasmanian born athlete took up hockey at nine years of age and his career was almost ended prematurely in 1999 when he suffered a depressed skull fracture.

Midfielder Tim Deavin made his international debut in 2010 at the Azlan Shah Cup winning gold before going on to be part of the successful team that won the 2010 Champions Trophy.

Known as “Deavo”, he was part of the Australian team that won gold at the 2011 Champions Trophy in Auckland. The historic win was the fourth consecutive win for the Kookaburras, the first team to have achieved this in history. A foot injury nearly ended Deavin’s Olympic debut, but he recovered to have a great start to 2012 competing in a string of Kookaburras international matches and cementing his spot on the side.

Selected for all international tournaments in 2015, the defender also represented the Ranchi Rays in this year’s Coal Hockey India League, losing their 2015 crown to the Jaypee Punjab Warriors.  Off the field, Deavin divides his time between hockey and owner/director of hockey equipment companies Lycan Sports and The Hockey Shop. Deavin also has completed a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and Cert IV in business management.
