Timothy's Story

Timothy “Tim” Young began rowing at Geelong Grammar School before joining Monash University Rowing Club. He represented Victoria in the youth eight in 1974 and later progressed to the state’s senior eight. Young stroked Monash to victory at the 1978 Australian University Championships and helped Victoria claim consecutive King’s Cups in 1979 and 1980.

Young made his senior Australian debut in the coxless four at the 1978 World Rowing Championships. A year later, he helped the Australian men’s eight finish fourth at the world championships in Bled. Young was 23 when he rowed in the seven seat of the eight at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. The crew advanced to the final after winning its repechage and finished fifth. It was Young’s only Olympic appearance.
