Treva’s Story
Queenslander Trevor “Treva” King was a talented half-back who was selected for two Australian Olympic hockey teams. His first selection came for Moscow 1980, but he did not compete after Australian hockey withdrew its teams amid the Olympic boycott. King made his Olympic debut at Los Angeles 1984, aged 28.
Australia completed the Los Angeles preliminary stage undefeated, beating Malaysia 5-0, Spain 3-1, West Germany 3-0, India 4-2 and the United States 2-1. The Australians then lost a closely fought semi-final 1-0 to Pakistan before Great Britain won the bronze medal match 3-2, leaving Australia fourth.
King was part of an outstanding period for the Australian men’s team. He helped Australia win three consecutive Champions Trophy titles from 1983 to 1985 before achieving the defining success of his international career at the 1986 World Cup in London. Australia defeated host nation England 2-1 in the final to secure the country’s first men’s world championship. King’s contribution to Australian hockey was recognised when he was named among Hockey Australia’s 2020 Hall of Fame inductees in the athlete category.
