Yvonne's Story
Yvonne Hill was born in Stirling and became one of Australia’s leading small-bore rifle shooters. A South Australian educator and mother of three, she earned selection for the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games during the dispute over Australia’s proposed boycott. When the Australian Shooting Association attempted to withdraw her entry, Hill successfully sought a Supreme Court injunction allowing her to compete.
Hill turned 43 during the Moscow Games and contested the mixed 50-metre rifle prone event. She scored 596 points to finish equal 11th among 56 competitors. Two years later, Hill won individual silver and team gold in the 50-metre rifle prone competition at the World Championships in Caracas. She also represented Australia at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and later contributed to shooting as a coach, selector and administrator.
