Zsigmond's Story

Zsigmond Kelevitz was born in Budapest, Hungary, and later represented Victoria after settling in Australia. Competing in the lightweight freestyle division, he was 22 when he made his Olympic debut at Montreal 1976, finishing equal 10th. Two years later, Kelevitz won gold at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games, becoming Australia’s first Commonwealth Games wrestling champion since 1954. He followed that success with sixth place at the 1979 World Championships.

Kelevitz returned to Olympic competition at Moscow 1980, where he finished 14th after losses in his opening two bouts. He won Commonwealth silver before a home crowd at Brisbane 1982, then produced his best Olympic performance at Los Angeles 1984, reaching the fifth-place contest and finishing fifth overall. Kelevitz completed his Commonwealth Games career with another lightweight silver medal at Edinburgh 1986.
