En Route to Paris 2024: Boomers snatch Oceania quota, more up for grabs for Modern Pentathlon, Table Tennis, Rowing and more

With the Boomers clinching the Oceania quota spot over New Zealand at the FIBA World Cup, more Paris 2024 spots are up for grabs this weekend at the Rowing World Championships and at continental qualifying events for Modern Pentathlon and Table Tennis.

Rowing World Championships

Australian rowers will take to the water for the  first opportunity to qualify boats for Paris 2024 at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. 
Running from 3-10 September, rowers will be chasing world titles along with quota spots, based on the top finishing boats per event. 

The top finishing boats with following limits per gender earn a quota for their country: Single sculls - Top 9; Pair - Top 11; Double sculls - Top 11; Lightweight double sculls - Top 7; Four - Top 7; Quad sculls - Top 7; Eight -Top 5.

Table Tennis Oceania Qualifying Tournament

Aussie table tennis athletes will be vying for Paris 2024 quota spots in Townsville from 2-3 September. The Oceania Qualifying Tournament is the first chance for athletes to qualify for Paris 2024, with the winner of the Teams event and Mixed Doubles event earning a Paris 2024 quota spot for their country.

The ITTF Oceania Senior and Youth Championships will follow from 4-9 September, where 34th world ranked singles player, Nicholas Lum is looking to defend his 2022 winning title.

Modern Pentathlon African/Oceania Champs

Aussie modern pentathletes have headed to Cairo, Egypt to face their competitors in the African/Oceania Championships. The event is a great opportunity for athletes to qualify for Paris 2024 with the top ranked Oceania athlete in both the men's and women's competition earning a quota by name.

Genevieve Janse van Rensburg and Zara Temesi are currently sitting in first and second place after the fencing round with 264 and 250 points respectively. Rhys Lanskey and Timothy Oliver are tied for seventh place with 215 points.

Weightlifting World Senior Championships

Major world ranking points are on offer at the World Senior Championships for Aussie weightlifters. The event, held from 4-17 September in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is a significant milestone in the lead up to Paris 2024, being one of five major milestone events for weightlifters on the road to Paris 2024.

Basketball Boomers FIBA World Cup and Opals Tour of China

The Boomers have won 2 out of their 3 group stage games, defeating Finland (98-72) and Japan (109-89), whilst suffering a close loss to Germany (82-85). 

Their current placing in the FIBA World Cup has meant they've qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, clinching the top Oceania spot in the tournament.

Having entered the round of 16, the Boomers have some tough games ahead of them, facing Slovenia tonight (Friday 1 September 10:10pm AEST), in a rematch of their bronze medal playoff at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 

They will continue their FIBA World Cup campaign on Sunday 3 September against Georgia (5:30pm AEST).

With their opening stage loss to Germany carrying over, the Boomers will need to finish top two in their pool of Germany, Slovenia and Georgia to progress to the quarter-finals.

The Opals are in the midst of their 2023 Tour of China, consisting of five friendly games around the country. Having won one out of their three games so far, the young Opals squad are eager to make a comeback this weekend when they play the remaining two games of the friendly series.


They are set to play China in Yinchuan on 2 September and 3 September to close off the five-game series.

Tennis US Open

The US Open continues this week with Australia's Alex De Minaur leading the charge, progressing through to the third round after defeating world no.86 Wu Yibing. 

Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata has also continued his career-best run in the US Open, scoring the biggest singles win of his Grand Slam career to reach the third round where he will come head-to-head with China's Zhang Zhizhen.


The Aussie tennis players have also kicked off their doubles campaign, with Ellen Perez, Daria Saville, Matt Ebden and Thanasi Kokkinakis all progressing to the second round.

Canoe Sprint Paris test event

The 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup 3, held from 30 August to 1 September in Paris, doubles as a test event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. 16 Aussie athletes have headed to the future Olympic venue, the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, to compete.

Canoe Slalom World Cup 4

Nine Aussie athletes have kicked off their 4th Canoe Slalom World Cup for the season. Hosted from 31 August to 3 September, in the mountains of Catalonia, the 1992 Olympic venue is a historic canoe slalom venue.

Olympic gold medallist, Jess Fox is heading into the event with 5 world cup medals under her belt from this current season. 

This is the last world cup stage before the team takes on the World Championships, held September 19-24 in the UK.

Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Challenge Cup 

Held in Mersin, Turkey from 1-3 September, the Mersin World Challenge Cup is the fourth of six events in the 2023 FIG series. 

Nine Aussie artistic gymnasts (3 males, 6 females) have been selected to represent Australia at the event, including Tokyo 2020 Olympians Georgia Godwin and Emily Whitehead.

Taekwondo Grand Prix

The 2023 World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Paris is the second Grand Prix of the season taking place from 1-3 September. The event promises to be one of the most exciting stops in the Grand Prix Series, with ranking points for Paris 2024 qualifications up for grabs, while also acting as a test event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Tokyo 2020 Olympians Stacey Hymer and Reba Stewart are among a five-strong Aussie team set tp compete in the 3-day event.

Road Cycling La Vuelta a Espana

The La Vuelta a Espana road race continues over the next week, with stage 8 kicking off on Saturday morning local time. 

Donning the green jersey, Australian Kaden Groves is the current leader of the points classification having made back-to-back wins in stages 4 and 5. Kaden looks to continue his success with more stage victories as the tour progresses.


Other Aussies in action include Michael Storer, Christopher Hamilton, Jarrod Drizners, and Callum Scotson.

World Surf League Finals

The top five surfers from the WSL Championships Tour will go head-to-head from 8-16 September at the WSL Finals in Lower Trestles, California, with the women’s and men’s World Champions to be decided in a one-day, winner-takes-all event. 

Four Australians are set to compete for the coveted title, including World No. 3 Ethan Ewing who is looking to return to the surf after sustaining a back injury in Tahiti last month.

Joining Ethan in the Finals action is 25-year-old and World No. 5 Jack Robinson, two-time World Champion and current World No. 2 Tyler Wright and 20-year-old young-gun Molly Picklum, currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

Football men's qualifiers for 2024 Qatar U23 Asian Cup

The Olyroos squad are set to face Laos and Tajikistan in a three-group pool round where they will have to finish at the top or be one of the 4 best second place finishers to qualify for the U23 Asian Cup in Qatar in 2024.

Hosted in Dushanbe, Tajikistan they will play Laos on 7 September at 1:30am AEST and Tajikistan on 13 September at 1:30am AEST, following South Korea's recent withdrawal from qualification.
