En Route to Paris 2024: The Opals out for Olympic qualification, the World Aquatic Championships continue and more

Basketball – Women’s Olympic Qualifiers

The road to Paris 2024 tips off in Belém, Brazil tomorrow (Friday 9 February 10am AEDT) as the Opals launch their final chance for Paris Olympic qualification.

The 12-player squad needs a top-3 finish in their pool of four to be one of the 12 teams to qualify for Paris.

The Opals are first set to play against the home country, Brazil, followed by Germany on Sunday 11 February and Serbia on Monday 12 February.

Swimming – World Aquatic Championships

After a training camp in Thailand, eighteen of the Aussie Dolphins squad are headed to the World Aquatic Championships in Doha, Qatar from Sunday 11 – Sunday 18 February.

The squad features two debutants, Iona Anderson and Jaclyn Barclay, who are set to contest the 50m & 100m backstroke events, with Jaclyn also taking on the 200m.

The 50m freestyle world champion Cameron McEvoy is set to defend his 2023 title, whilst Shayna Jack tees up the 50m and 100m and joins teammate Brianna Throssell in the 200m.

Diving – World Aquatic Championships

Aussie divers are continuing their World Aquatic Championships campaign in Doha, Qatar with Olympic quotas on the line.

Rio 2016 bronze medallists Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney have secured a quota spot in the women’s 3m synchronised after their silver medal performance last night.


Attention now turns to Cassiel Rousseau and Domonic Bedggood who will look to achieve another Paris 2024 quota spot in tonight’s men’s 10m platform synchronised event with a top four finish.

Water Polo – World Aquatic Championships

The Aussie Sharks and Stingers continue their World Aquatic Championship campaigns in Doha.

The Stingers are off to an impressive start with wins over Singapore and New Zealand whilst the Sharks have won one out of two pool games, going down to Croatia in the opening round.


The Stingers are set to play against Hungary at 9:30pm AEDT tonight Thursday 8 February whilst the Sharks will take on Spain tomorrow night at 9:30pm AEDT to close off their pool games before entering the round of 16.

Cycling – BMX Racing – World Cup

Rounds 1 and 2 of the UCI BMX Racing World Cup takes Aussie riders to Rotorua, New Zealand from Saturday 10 February to Sunday 11 February.

The Aussie team is headlined by Saya Sakakibara and Lauren Reynolds in the women’s and Izaac Kennedy and Bodi Turner in the men’s.

Cycling – Track – Oceania Championships

The Oceania Track Cycling Championships are taking Aussie cyclists to Cambridge, New Zealand from Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 February.

Track cyclists from across Australia, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Northern Mariana Islands and Tahiti will battle it out for the prestigious Oceania Championship titles.

Hockey – FIH Pro League

The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras are currently competing in season 5 of the FIH Pro League in India.

Coming off two strong 3-0 wins over the United States and India, the Hockeyroos are set to play against world ranked no.1 the Netherlands at 11:00pm AEDT Friday 9 February.


The Kookaburras are ready to kick off their FIH Pro League campaign against Spain on Sunday 11 February at 11:00pm AEDT.

Surfing – WSL World Championship Tour

Eleven Aussies are in action this week at the 2024 World Surf League Tour season-opener, the Pipe Pro Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii which kicked off on 31 January.

Ethan Ewing is the sole Australian to progress through to the final 8 in the men’s competition, while Molly Picklum has set the pace posting the two highest wave scores of the women’s competition in her opening round win.

Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons have also joined Molly in the round of 16, with Isabella Nichols and India Robinson needing to win their elimination round heats to join the trio in the final 16.

Taekwondo – Canada Open Championship

Sixty-five Aussie taekwondo athletes have arrived in Vancouver, Canada ahead of the Canada Open Championship held from Thursday 8 – 10 February, before they make their way down to Reno, Nevada to contest the US Open Championships from 16-18 February.

The Canada and US Open Championship competitions mark the final stop on the path to Paris 2024 before the Oceania Olympic Qualifying event in April.
