Modern Pentathlon - Paris 2024 quotas for Aussie Oceania Champions 

Genevieve van Rensburg and Rhys Lanskey have secured quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics, as the top Oceania finishers in the combined Africa/Oceania Qualifying Event in Cairo, Egypt.

Van Rensburg topped an all-Australian podium, ahead of Zara Temesi and Tully Watt, while Lanskey took gold ahead of Australian Tim Oliver and New Zealand's Naoki Toyomura.


Van Rensburg was ecstatic to win the Oceania title and secure a Paris quota.

"There aren't enough words for how happy and excited I am. This is honestly a dream come true! I am so grateful for my coaches, friends and family who have supported me through this journey, I couldn't have done it without them."

Lanskey was similarly thrilled to qualify for Paris.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to come to Cairo and compete against some of the world's best. Personally, it's been a difficult couple of years battling some injuries, and although I'm still a long way from my best, I am very happy to have come here and won the Oceania Championships and a quota place for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics."

Table Tennis - Maximum Paris quotas as Australia dominates Oceania qualification tournament

Australia has swept the Oceania Qualifying Tournament in Townsville, winning the women's team, men's team and mixed doubles events, earning the maximum three Paris 2024 quotas per gender for Australia.

The Australians didn't drop a set in the teams event, with the men's team defeating New Zealand, Marshall Islands and Fiji, while the women were too strong against New Zealand and Fiji.

The Mixed doubles quota was already secured before the final, with two Australian teams progressing through the rounds to reach the final two. Nicholas Lum and Minhyung Jee came out victorious in a tightly contested affair, overcoming six-time Olympian Jian Fang Lay and Finn Huu 6-11, 11-4, 5-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.

Taekwondo - Grand Prix bronze in Paris

Bailey Lewis has won bronze in the -58kg class at the Paris Grand Prix.

Entering as the 22nd seed, Lewis won his opening three bouts to reach the semi-final, where he went down to eventual gold medallist Iranian Mahdi Hajimousaei.

The bronze medal finish also provides vital ranking points towards Olympic qualification.

Canoe Slalom - Fox continues her C1 gold run 

Olympic champion Jess Fox has come away with her third C1 gold medal from four Canoe Slalom World Cups this season, at the World Cup event in La Seu, Spain. Jess backed up her C1 gold with a silver medal in the K1.

Fox has totalled seven medals across the two events this season, placing her well in the lead up to the World Championships held in London, the first opportunity to earn quota spots for Paris 2024.

In the Kayak Cross event, which will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo, Tim Anderson and Noemie Fox both progressed through to the quarterfinals, with Tim finishing 12th & Noemie 13th.

Canoe Sprint - Olympic Champions finish third at Paris test event

Tokyo 2020 gold medallists, Tom Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen have rounded out their season placing a narrow third in the K2 500m at the World Cup in Paris. The pair claimed bronze, trailing behind Germany and Spain by 0.14 and 0.06 seconds, respectively.

"I'm really happy to finish off the season with a bronze," said van der Westhuyzen at the end of the regatta.

"The level has really lifted this year and we have some serious work to do if we want to be competitive in Paris."


The World Cup also doubled as an Olympic test event, making it a great opportunity for the athletes to become more familiar with the conditions at the Vaires-Sur-Marne course.

"It was great to get a feel for what could be next year at the Test Event." van der Westhuyzen said.

"The Olympic feel is in the air, and I am really looking forward to everything the next few months has to offer."

Cycling - Groves in green jersey at La Vuelta Espana

Australian sprinter Kaden Groves is wearing the green jersey of the points classification leader after nine stages of the Vuelta Espana.

With two sprint stage wins from the opening five stages, Groves has built and maintained a strong lead, sitting on 158 points almost 100 clear of second placed Andrea Vendrame of Italy in 66 points.


While still more than 1700km and 12 stages to ride, Groves is in a fantastic position to win the first points classification at a grand tour of his career.

Basketball - Boomers finish FIBA World Cup on a win, Opals' narrow losses to China

After a loss to Slovenia 80-91 ended the Boomers' hopes of a World Cup medal, the team rebounded to finish their FIBA World Cup campaign defeating Georgia 100-84.

Despite being eliminated from the tournament, the Boomers have secured their position at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

"It's definitely a disappointing result for a major tournament from our part but it was important to us as a playing group that we came out and finished this thing right, finished with a win," said co-captain, Patty Mills.

"The positive for us is we've got the Olympics 10 months away and for us to keep building what we've started from a foundation point six weeks ago into a very strong Olympics. You haven't seen the best of us, we'll get away from this now and get back together soon and Paris Olympics is what our goal is."


The Opals have finished their five-game friendly series against China, winning 1 out of the 5 games. With each game closer than the last, the young Opals squad have embraced the challenging games.

The friendly games are important for preparation ahead of February's qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics.


Coach, Cheryl Chambers stated, "It is so fantastic to have the opportunity to experience international competition. It has been invaluable to our group and will help develop some of our exciting up-and-coming players."

Tennis - Aussies advance to US Open quarter finals

Australians Matt Ebden and Ellen Perez have both secured their quarter final spots in the doubles competition.

The Ebden/Bopanna (IND) duo blitzed through their opening two rounds and fought through a fierce third round to reach the quarters.

In the mixed doubles, Perez and her Dutch partner, Jean-Julien Rojer scored their consecutive straight-sets win. To advance to the semi-finals, Perez/Rojer will need to defeat the top-seeded American duo, Pegula/Krajicek in their next match.

Alex de Minaur is eyeing off for a place in the US Open men's singles quarter-finals as he takes on world number 3, Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round.

22-year-old wildcard, Rinky Hijikata has achieved his best ever singles result at a Grand Slam, making it to the fourth round where he went down to 10th world ranked American, Frances Tiafoe. Currently ranked 110th, Hijikata's career best is set to vault him into the top 100 rankings.

Artistic Gymnastics - Stewart, Moore and Thorpe finish within top 10 in Mersin

Aussie artistic gymnasts, Blair Stewart, Jesse Moore and Heath Thorpe headed to Mersin, Turkey to compete in the 2023 FIG World Challenge Cup.

A first world cup for Stewart, he placed 9th on the high bars, narrowly missing the finals. Meanwhile, Moore qualified for the finals on the pommel horse, scoring a personal best of 14.4. Thorpe placed 5th on the still rings, scoring a 13.6 (8.7 E) at his 2nd world cup.

 

They are set to compete in Szombathely, Hungary next week from 8-10 September, in the fifth part of the series.

Athletics - Diamond League medals for Patterson, Hall and Bissett

Eleanor Patterson has picked up bronze in the Xiamen Diamond League in China, jumping 1.92m. After six of the seven Diamond League meetings featuring the women's high jump, Patterson sits in seventh position, qualifying for the Diamond League Final to be held from September 16-17.

On the track, Australian 1500m record holder Linden Hall has run her second fastest time of 3:57.92, landing in 3rd place.


Over in Zurich, Switzerland, Oceania 800m record holder, Catriona Bissett has raced her way to the podium, placing 2nd 1.06 seconds behind Great Britain's, Laura Muir.

Rowing - Rigney 'seals' her spot in the single scull quarter final

Tokyo 2020 Olympian, Tara Rigney has 'sealed' her spot in the quarter final of the women's single scull after spotting a "seal or otter" in the water right before her heat.

"I thought it was a seal... it could have been an otter; but it came up at the start line, as if to say hello," Rigney said. "I was worried it was going to keep on swimming towards me but then it went for another person, so it wasn't an issue."

 

Three of Australia's five boats have qualified for the quarter finals; the women's single scull of Tara Rigney, the men's pair of Fergus Hamilton and Simon Keenan and the men's lightweight double scull of Sean Murphy and Oscar McGuinness.
