Henry's Story
1881 – 1940
Harry Hauenstein, from the Leichhardt Rowing Club in Sydney, rowed in the five seat in the eight at Stockholm 1912. He served in World War 1 and was awarded the Military Medal. After the cessation of hostilities, he was a member of the winning AIF (Australian Imperial Force) crew at the Royal Peace Regatta in 1919.
The cup presented by King George V to that crew eventually became the trophy, the King’s Cup, which is awarded to the winning men’s eight at the annual Australian interstate rowing regatta. Other Olympians in the AIF crew were Sydney Middleton (London 1908, Stockholm 1912) and Arthur Scott (Paris1924).
