Born in Delhi, India, Sandeep Kumar has won several Indian and Australian national championships in wrestling. Kumar moved to Australia permanently in 2004 to pursue more opportunities in the sport and became an Australian citizen in 2007. Kumar worked as a Melbourne taxi driver to fund his journey to Beijing. At the 2008 Olympic Games he competed for Australia in freestyle wrestling and placed 20th.
