The Australian Men’s Rugby Sevens team have gone agonisingly close to their first Olympic medal in Paris.

The bronze medal clash against South Africa had all the intensity and desperation you would expect, with the unexpected drama of a red card against Australia.

But despite a remarkable comeback by the Aussies, South Africa won the bronze 26-19.

Australia was narrowly ahead (5-7) in the first half following a Nathan Lawson try and Dietrich Roache conversion. But the second half was full of drama.

With five minutes remaining South Africa scored from inside their half with a great team try (12-7). The video referee reviewed a defensive effort from captain Nick Malouf on the halfway line during the play, which resulted in a red card.

Zain Davids scored his second consecutive try for South Africa, and the team’s third for the match soon after. At 19-7 and a man down, it looked all over for the Australians but they kept fighting for that medal.

Coach John Manenti made two changes to bolster Australia’s attack, bringing on Corey Toole and Mark Nawaqanitawase. Corey scored soon after and then Henry Paterson crossed to draw Australia level 19-19.

The remarkable comeback wouldn’t be enough. The South African captain Selvyn Davids scored again to secure the bronze with no time remaining.

After watching the French win the gold medal over Fiji (28-7) in front of 70,000 fans with his team, Nick reflected on the superb effort from his team.

“We wanted to leave everything out there and I think the last few minutes of that game you probably saw that more than ever,” Nick said.

“We’ve been trying to do this all tournament long and it wasn't quite enough in the end.

“I’m super grateful for all the support here in Paris and back home. I've known for a while how special this time is and what a great bunch of men they are. I'm really proud Australia got to see that.”

Despite the bitter disappointment of just missing the podium at his third Games, Nick will never forget the atmosphere created by the capacity crowds at Stade de France.

“Playing here in front of a full house is pretty incredible. I’m not sure I'll ever play in a better atmosphere than this. It’s been electric from the first game to the last.”

The Aussie men will now be cheering on the women who start their campaign on Sunday in Paris.
