And just to show it wasn’t that hard, last year’s men’s GS champion Bode Miller came out a day later and also started his title defence in the best possible way.
Paerson, the 2003/04 World Cup overall champion and slalom champions as well as GS titleholder, defeated Tanja Poutiainen of Finland and Spain’s Maria Jose Rienda Contreras. Rienda Contreras was third on the GS standings last season.
The men’s event was even more of a re-run of last season. Not only did Miller win, Italian Massimiliano Blardone, third on the standings last season, took silver and Kalle Palander of Finland, runner up to Miller last year, claimed bronze.
The alpine circuit takes a break until the weekend of November 26/27, when it resumes with two slaloms and a GS for the women in Aspen and a downhill and a super G for the men in Lake Louise.
Australia’s AJ Bear and Craig Branch are expected to be in the line-up in Lake Louise, Bear making his come-back from injury.
