Australia’s Dina Aspandiyarova has won sliver following a tense final of the women’s 10m air pistol event on Tuesday afternoon at the ISSF World Cup, held at the Sydney International Shooting Centre.

Qualifying second for the final with a score of 383 out of 400, the 33-year-old Victorian shot a final score of 481.7.

The previously unheard of South Korean, Wenjun Park, won the event with a score of 484.2, with 2008 Olympic gold medallist Wenjun Guo of China third on 481.

Aspandiyarova began the final with scores of 10.7 10.1 and 9.3 to be in the lead after three shots, the Chinese duo of Yan Chen and Wenjun Guo only a few points behind.

After five shots Aspandiyarova had slipped to third behind Park and Gou, trailing by just 0.4 of a point.

Steeling herself over her final shots, Aspandiyarova finished with 9.8 10.0 and 9.8, the run consistent enough to give her second spot.

Aspandiyarova, who was born in Yugoslavia, was ecstatic after the final, saying she hoped to continue her good form through the remainder of this competition and the international season.

“This is my first medal at World Cup level and it feels great,” Aspandiyarova said.

“I felt very good this morning and my performance in qualifying meant I came into the final confident of a good result,”

“I now have my first medal at this level; I’m looking forward to my next one.”

Fellow Australian and double 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lalita Yauhleuskaya failed to make the final with a score of 376 out of a possible 400 earning her 14th place, while Linda Ryan was 20th with 372 points.

All three Australian women will return for the 25 metre pistol event on Thursday and Friday.

In other results on Tuesday, Chris Roberts was the best placed Australian in the men's 50 metre pistol event in 18th, while Alethea Nevada Sedgman finished 24th in the women's 10 metre air rifle.

2008 Olympic bronze medal winner Warren Potent will be one of the favourites when he takes part in the men's 50 metre prone rifle event on Wednesday.

Potent heads into today’s event as both crowd and form favourite, the current world record holder winning three of the four 2009 World Cup events.
