The Australian luge squad has delivered another triumphant performance over the weekend on the 1976 Olympic luge track at the World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls, Austria.

LUGE: The Australian luge squad has delivered another triumphant performance over the weekend on the 1976 Olympic luge track at the World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls, Austria.

With the race split into two parts for broadcast purposes, the Australians all competed in the second tier race - the Nation's Cup.

“Igls has been another successful week for the Aussies, all performing personal bests on race day,” Sochi hopeful Ashley Cooney said.

Cooney, a former-gymnast, was hampered in competition by a foot injury, however the young athlete was determined not to let it get in her way.

“I've struggled this week with a foot injury,” she said.

“But it'll take a lot more then bruising and soft tissue damage to stop me from following my dreams.”

The 18-year-old from Perth finished 1.835 seconds behind the race leader Nina Reithmayer of Austria, in a time of 42.081 seconds, ending in 39th place.

In the women’s World Cup event, Natalie Geisenberger of Germany celebrated her 18th victory at this level, while her teammate and Olympic Champion Tatjana Huefner made a comeback after her back injury, posting a second-place finish.

Townsville’s Alex Ferlazzo was the best performing Aussie in the men’s Nations Cup finishing in 27th place in a field of 50 athletes.

Ferlazzo was only 0.684 seconds off the race leader, Tucker West of the USA, and finished with the final time of 51.437 seconds.

Ferlazzo's teammate Dan Newton from South Australia was 44th in the Nation's Cup in a time of 52.834 seconds, 2.081 seconds off the race leader.

In the men’s World Cup event, Germany’s lugers celebrated a double victory with Olympic Champion Felix Loch earning his first victory this season and his compatriot David Moeller finishing in second position. Dominik Fischnaller of Italy, winner of the season opener last week in Lillehammer (Norway), posted a third-place finish.

The Australians now travel to Winterberg, Germany for the third World Cup of the season taking place from 30 November to 1 December. They are anticipating frostier conditions as the season officially changes from Autumn to Winter.

“The temperature is starting to get a lot colder which means hard ice and fast times!” Cooney said.
