CANOE/SLALOM: Australia’s Jessica Fox and Lucien Delfour both paid a heavy price for missing gates at the canoe slalom World Cup in Pau, France, overnight.

Both athletes who have been selected for the Rio Olympic Games were looking to finish the World Cup season with a top result.

Fox, 22, sizzled down the K1 course to post the best time of the final and, she thought, land a gold medal.

But she looked on in horror as a protest was lodged, claiming she had missed a gate on the run, and when the protest was upheld a 50 second penalty was added, dropping the Olympic silver medallist to 10th place.

Lucien Delfour suffered a similar fate in the semi-finals of the men's K1, the 50-second penalty ruling him out of the final.

Despite the penalties, both Fox and Delfour finish the World Cup season in strong form and confident of a bold showing at the Rio Olympic Games come August.

Earlier in the weekend Fox won silver in the non-Olympic C1.
