Groth's Rio dream comes true
Sam Groth has been selected in the men's singles for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

TENNIS: The Australian Olympic Committee has today selected Sam Groth in the Australian Tennis team for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Groth, the 2015 Newcombe medallist, originally missed out on a spot in the men’s singles but due to the withdrawal of players from other countries has taken up a late acceptance in the event.

“It is fantastic that Australia will have four players in the men’s singles. The Australian Team just keeps on growing and Sam’s inclusion brings our Team to 421 athletes,” Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller said.

“I know Sam was disappointed when he wasn’t originally granted a spot in Rio by the ITF and he was then aiming for Tokyo, so it’s good news for him that his Olympic dream has been granted.”

Arrangements are now being made for Groth to travel from the USA where he has been playing to join the rest of the team in the coming days.

The Olympic Tennis competition, and the men’s singles, begins on Day 1 - Sunday, August 6.

This now takes the Tennis section of the 2016 Australian Team to 10 athletes.
