VOLLEYBALL: Australia has qualified for next year's men's volleyball world championships after claiming victory in the Asian qualifying tournament in Canberra.

The Volleyroos had one foot on the plane after beating Kazakhstan in four sets on Saturday night following a 25-12 25-16 25-18 win over Kuwait to open the four-nation tournament.

And they made sure of their place at the world titles in Poland with a 25-23 25-13 25-23 win over Thailand on Sunday.

It will be the sixth world championships for the Australians, who also qualified for last year's Olympics and are ranked 12th in the world.

The Australians have had to rebuild their side since the Olympics with injury and retirement forcing coach Jon Uriarte to find a new libero, a new setter and a new captain.

Uriarte singled out the performance of 17-year-old libero Luke Perry, who he said showed maturity and confidence beyond his years.

The Volleyroos went through the weekend losing just one set, to the powerful Kazakhstan combination, and recorded straight sets wins over Thailand and Kuwait.

The Australians will head to Dubai later this month to compete in the Asian Volleyball Championships.
