RUGBY SEVENS: The Qantas Women’s Sevens have finished seventh at the Amsterdam Sevens to claim fifth spot overall in the inaugural IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

The result was a disappointing one for the Australians, who entered day two of the tournament with great expectations following two wins and a loss in the pool stage.

The playoff stage saw the Australians lose their cup quarter-final 19-10 to Russia, then fall 15-5 to Spain, before finally beating France 14-12 in the seventh-place playoff.

Qantas Women’s Sevens coach Chris Lane said a lot had been learned from the last two weekends and their attention was now solely on the World Cup in June.

“Today was a disappointing end to a very solid two weeks of Rugby for the girls,” Lane said.

“Basic handling errors and missed tackles let us down today. Overall it has been a good two weeks and we have again exposed many new players to the physical demands of international Rugby.

“We now have the difficult task of selecting our World Cup squad over the next two weeks.”

Day one of the tournament saw the Australians win their first two encounters against Spain, 31-7, and Brazil, 24-0, before losing 10-5 to the United States in shocking weather conditions at Amsterdam’s NRCA Stadium.
