The New South Wales Institute of Sport and Ski and Snowboard Australia Development Mogul teams have competed in their opening Europa Cup event of the season in Stari Vrh, Slovenia.

Ten Australian athletes took part in the event, the main highlight coming on day two of competition with a medal performance from Roanna Humphries in her first weekend of Europa Cup. Sam Hall provided another highlightm, narrowly missing out on a medal in fourth place.

Day one saw three Australian athletes qualify for finals, with the leading performance coming in the women’s division, with Nicole Parks in 10th and Roanna Humphries in 11th. Sam Hall was the leading male, finishing in 15th place.

On day two the NSWIS and SSA teams improved on the previous day’s performances, with two male athletes and all five female athletes advancing to the final.

Sam Hall narrowly missed out on his first Europa Cup podium, finishing in fourth place, and 14 year-old Mathew Graham, making his Europa Cup debut over the weekend, placed 16th.

Roanna Humphries led the five-strong Australian female contingent in the final, with her first ever Europa Cup medal, a bronze. Also in the final, Nicole Parks finished fourth, Sarah Melville seventh, Karinya Turnbull eighth and Britteny Cox in tenth place.

NSWIS Head Coach Peter 'Toppa' Topalovic was very happy with the results, commenting:

"This has been our most successful Europa Cup ever from a team perspective, all the girls making finals and Roanna in particular making a podium in her first competitions speaks volumes. Sam Hall was extremely unlucky to not make the podium in the men’s competition. He was only 0.25 off third place and he now knows he is good enough to mix it with the best. Matt Graham's debut was astonishing, considering he has only had eight days of skiing leading into the event and it's his first Europa Cup start - just one mistake on his bottom air cost him a top 8 result".

The team will now remain in Slovenia for more training, before competing in the next Europa Cup in Chatel, France, on February 5 and 6.
